Let�s face it, we all love our smartphones but the one thing we don�t like is the key logging software such as Carrier IQ that is added without our knowledge. The main perpetrator in the Carrier IQ saga is Google�s Android Software which reportedly monitors SMS, web usage data and any keystrokes it feels like logging. We also reported not so long ago that Carrier IQ was also keeping tabs on the iPhone which has added even more fuel to the fire. The iOS iteration even though it is not as daunting as the Google Android still poses as an invasion of privacy. Apple has confirmed that they are currently in the phasing out process of the controversial software and that they will be completely removing it in a future software update. They have not stated when this future update will be and iOS 5.1 has already been sent out to developers but whether it has been removed or not we don�t know. Apple did release a statement in relation to this matter and this is what they had to say: We stopped supporting Carrier IQ with iOS 5 in most of our products and will remove it completely in a future software update. With any diagnostic data sent to Apple, customers must actively opt-in to share this information, and if they do, the data is sent in an anonymous and encrypted form and does not include any personal information. We never recorded keystrokes, messages or any other personal information for diagnostic data and have no plans to ever do so. If you do have an iPhone or other iDevice and you want to make sure that you are not being watched over you can do this manually by opening the settings icon and going to General > About > Diagnostics & Usage > and opt for Don�t Send. This will ensure that all your information and data is kept private until Apple completely remove the Carrier IQ from their software.

Forbes has reported that security researcher Charlie Miller has released a video that shows one of Apple�s iPhones executing unsigned code. In simple terms, he has made the iPhone do things that Apple never authorized. What Miller did was make a simple stock checker app that he had approved with the App Store. Running this app in the normal way doesn�t do anything that it shouldn�t, but when Miller activates something on a server the app accesses he get access to the iPhone remotely and is able to launch apps, make the iPhone vibrate, browse the iPhone�s file system and even download the contents of the address book. This type of flaw could create a lot of nightmares for people. Apple has since removed the app from the App Store and Miller has not released information on how this hack works. He is giving Apple the chance to plug the hole in iOS 5.0.1. He did however; state that the flaw is part of Nitro, a JavaScript engine added in iOS 4.3. This information in the wrong hands could means that malicious users could get an app through Apple�s review process and then systematically steal data from people�s iPhones worldwide. Apple is working hard on their iOS 5.0.1 release where they are hoping to solve the current battery issues and we are sure they will be working on this security issue too. This information showed that on average, pages load in 9.6 seconds using iOS 4 and just 4.1 seconds when running iOS 5. Apple have always spent a lot of time with the rendering engine that is built into Mobile Safari and it is a good thing too. Even if you don�t upgrade your iPhone to the new iPhone 4S you will still see an increase in web performance if you update your software. iOS 5 is available as a free update for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

That�s right, StatusGoogle is a jailbreak tweak and when you download this it adds a new search bar to the notification center which is iOS 5�s new way of handling all your notifications. Once you install StatusGoogle all you have to do is type in your search and hit return and you will automatically be in mobile safari with your Google search loading automatically. We do hope that Apple will begin to allow third party app store apps to take advantage of the notification center soon but until then if you want to take advantage of it you need to jailbreak your idevice.

It is believed that Oracle has already booked the YBCA for October 4, which leaves Apple without their traditional venue. There have been some reports that have suggested that the fifth generation handset might not be ready in time and that a staggered launch with a less dramatic iPhone 4S will be revealed first. Apple could of course just be opting for a less dramatic event for the newly appointed Tim Cook to make his debut. He is expected to be taking center stage along with the iPhone 5 itself and we are sure that all eyes will be on his performance especially after what his predecessor has done. Invitations for the launch event have not yet been issued so again this is rumor and speculation and we will have to wait to see what the official reports are when the time comes.

This could actually hint towards a possible iPhone 5 and iOS 5 launch during this time. This news was announced on the AppleInsider and this report suggests that the people in Cupertino are gearing up for the launch of a new products or perhaps products, namely the iPhone 5 and iOS 5. AppleInsider reported on their blog that Apple are denying requests for employee vacations during the second week in October which hints at the fact that the company are anticipating an influx of customers to its stores around that time related to the availability of the new iOS 5 and the fifth generation iPhone. In some locations, vacation time has been block out from the 9th to the 15th of October. There are several independent reports that also indicate this and the strongest of these comes from Al Gore who was heard saying that the new iPhones are coming in October. All Things D�s which is by John Paczkowski claimed that Apple would be holding a media event on the 4th of October where the next generation iPhone would be announced by new CEO Tim Cook with a launch a week or so later. Apple has also announced that they are resetting iCloud and iTunes Match data which is another hint that they are getting ready for iOS 5 and the iPhone 5. There are reports that we might just see two new iPhones being launched with one being a low end iPhone 4 look-alike which will be aimed at people who can�t afford the aggressively priced one. Thankfully all these issues have now been resolved and Redsn0w 0.9.8b6 has been released. This new release of Redsn0w, according to MuscleNerd shouldn�t be too far from the final 0.9.8 release which will be released once the final version of iOS 5 is released. MuscleNerd is a well known member of the iOS jailbreaking community that have been developing Redsn0w over the years. The iPhone Dev-Team Blog had this to say: We�ve released redsn0w 0.9.8b6 to jailbreak iOS 5 beta 6 (point it directly at the beta 6 IPSW). Two important notes about this version: 1. Please let your device boot normally to iOS 5 beta 6 and do a clean shutdown before jailbreaking. 2. Boot logos have intentionally been disabled for now, so you�ll see a black screen on tethered boots (you can re-enable logos or verbose boot with command-line options if you really want them back). Due to increased sensitivity to abrupt file system shutdowns in iOS 5 beta 6, it is very important that you do a clean shutdown before running redsn0w. The previous version of Redsn0w functioned with iOS 5 beta 6, some users reported several stability issues with jailbroken devices on a daily basis. If you have already jailbroken your beta 6 device with Redsn0w you might want to re-jailbreak it by restoring it through iTunes and then running Redsn0w 0.9.8b6 again. There are no visual changes in this new version but it will fix any stability issues you might have experienced. This update is simply aimed at fixing bugs. It is still a tethered jailbreak and it does not make any advancement towards an untethered iOS 5 jailbreak. It is unlikely that an untethered jailbreak will make an appearance until the final version if iOS 5 is released. This version of Redsn0w is aimed at developers who are using the iOS 5 beta.

The main things for users is that they will be able to jailbreak iOS 5 beta 5 and they will be able to save and create custom jailbroken ISW firmware files. They can also create custom packages and change the boot screen logo and later use this on any supported devices. Once users have obtained a modified IPSW file they can simple restore it using iTunes with their device in DFU mode. All the instructions on how to do this are provided by the tool itself which is great. One thing that must be pointed out, is the fact that this is a tethered jailbreak and this means that users have to plug their devices into their PC�s every time it loses power or restarts. Users also have to run iBooty which is included in the Sn0wbreeze package every time the device is powered on. This may sound painful but it is the best way to jailbreak iOS 5 beta 5 at the moment and there doesn�t seem to be any untethered jailbreak solution in the pipeline that is going to be offered any time soon. This is really bad news for all those jailbreakers and it comes as the Dev Team begin explaining what Apple�s iOS 5 betas are revealing. It seems Apple is determined to combat SHSH blobs moving forward and Apple are aggressively combating the replay attacks that have allowed users to use iTunes to restore to previous firmware versions using saved SHSH blobs. Apple has stated to make more use of the APTicket once you install iOS 5 and beyond and they will be checking on each boot of an iDevice. The problem for jailbreakers is that the APTicket will be uniquely generated every time an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch is restored and this means that existing methods of saving SHSH blobs will no longer work. Apple are also making sure that they are the only ones that will know what the APTicket should be. APTIcket is changing starting with iOS 5 and it is being used like the BBTicket. The LLB and iBoot stages of the boot sequence are also being refined to depend on the authenticity of the APTicket. This is going to happen at every boot and because Apple has the crypto keys to properly sign the per-restore APTicket, replayed APTickets are useless. According to the Dev Team this points to a new approach from Apple but until Apple brings out the final release of iOS 5 the Dev Team are still guessing at what Apple are planning to do. There is still a little bit of good news for jailbreakers and Geohot�s Limera1n which takes effect before any APTicket checks are made could still provide a tethered jailbreak solution. As this is also only going to affect restores starting at iOS 5 and onward Geohot�s Limera1n exploit will work and so should any other tethered jailbreaks.
